Tackling Back to School Anxiety Together!

anxious child
Back to school is finally upon us!

While it’s an exciting time, it can also bring some nerves for kids and parents. Feeling anxious about the unknown is completely normal.

Your child might be excited to see friends but worried about new teachers and classes or even transitioning to another school.

Here are some simple tips to help ease those anxious thoughts, feelings and emotions:

Talk it out: Create a safe space for your child to share their feelings. Just listening can make a big difference.

Validate their emotions: Let them know it’s okay to feel anxious. A little reassurance goes a long way.

Create a routine: Consistency can be comforting. Stick to regular bedtimes and morning routines.

Be a role model: Show them how you handle stress. Kids learn a lot by watching you!  As a parent, showing your own worries can amplify your child’s anxiety, as kids often mirror their parents’ emotions.

Encourage healthy habits: Make sure they’re sleeping well, eating right, and staying active.

Set realistic expectations: Help them set achievable goals and avoid comparisons with others.

Celebrate achievements: Acknowledge their efforts, no matter how small.

Seek professional help: If anxiety is affecting their daily life, consider talking to a Child or Teen Therapist.
