👣Grounding techniques are practices that help you focus back on the present moment. They work by engaging your senses—sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell—helping you anchor in the here and now.
Simple yet powerful tools that can benefit parents, teens and children.
How it works:
- Reduces Anxiety: Grounding techniques can lower stress levels by interrupting negative thought patterns. By focusing on your surroundings, you shift attention away from worries.
Â
- Activates the Nervous System: Engaging your senses stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, which promotes relaxation and calmness.
Â
- Improves Focus: These techniques enhance your awareness and concentration, making staying present in the here and now easier.

The Grounding Technique
5 Things You Can See
- Look around you and name five things you notice. They can be anything from a colourful book to a plant.
4 Things You Can Touch
- Find four different textures around you. It could be the softness of a pillow, the coolness of a table, or the roughness of a wall.
3 Things You Can Hear
- Close your eyes for a moment and listen. Identify three sounds nearby, like birds chirping, a fan humming, or distant chatter.
2 Things You Can Smell
- Take a deep breath and notice two scents in the air. It could be the aroma of food or the freshness of a room.
1 Thing You Can Taste
- Have a sip of water or a small snack. Focus on the flavour and texture as you enjoy it.
